At Southern Tree Care Ltd, we use every part of the trees we fell. Trees are an excellent natural material that provides sustainable fuel and heat. As a by-product of our work, we accumulate a great amount of wood from many different species of trees with many varied qualities, perfect for firewood.
We hate seeing perfectly good materials needlessly go to waste and landfill when there is an easy and cost-effective solution available. That’s why at Southern Tree Care Ltd we repurpose the scrap wood from previous jobs, treat it, and give it a new life as firewood.
Being based in Salisbury, we at Southern Tree Care Ltd operate within a 30-mile radius of the city that covers Wiltshire, Hampshire, and Dorset.
Firewood can fall into two different categories; hardwood and softwood logs. If it’s consistent long burning that you’re after for places such as fireplaces and log burners, hardwood fire logs are the type for you. Hardwood fire logs have a high density, which makes them burn cleaner and for much longer than softwood firewood.
Softwood fire logs are best used for tasks such as starting fires quickly and easily. However, their higher moisture content makes them burn quickly and with unwanted smoke and sparks. Softwood firewood is also considerably lighter to handle than its hardwood counterparts, which makes it cheaper and easier to work with.
Hardwood firewood is made from trees that grow slowly over time such as Oak, Birch, and Ash which will shed their leaves in the winter, creating thick and dense firewood. Whereas softwood tree species include Larch, Douglas Fir, and Spruce which are coniferous trees that produce needles and grow relatively quickly.
If you’re unsure which type of firewood is best for your needs, our friendly team can give you the best advice and guidance.
Seasoned firewood is cut firewood that has been left naturally to air dry by itself. The aim of seasoning is to reduce as much moisture content from the firewood as possible, giving the wood as much burn time as possible. Seasoning can take between 12-24 months, depending on the species of the tree.
Firewood needs to be as dry as possible, as if not the heat created by the fire is used to evaporate the moisture from the wood, producing less overall heat.
At Southern Tree Care Ltd, we provide well-seasoned quality firewood delivered straight to your door across Wiltshire, Hampshire, and Dorset.
